The total external debt of Romania increased in January 2026 by almost 2 billion euros, reaching 229.3 billion euros, according to BNR data.
This increase was mainly driven by long-term debt, which reached 181.7 billion euros, representing 79.2% of the total external debt, recording a growth of 1.3% compared to the end of 2025. In contrast, short-term debt slightly decreased to 47.6 billion euros, which constitutes 20.8% of the total. The service rate of long-term external debt decreased to 11.8%, compared to 17.2% in 2025. The coverage ratio of goods and services imports increased to 7.2 months, and the coverage ratio of short-term external debt with foreign exchange reserves rose to 109.6%.
