The Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, announced on Thursday a significant reduction in the budget deficit, which reached 1% in the first quarter of 2026, compared to 2.3% of GDP in the same period last year.

The deficit decreased to 22 billion lei, down from approximately 44 billion in 2025. Nazare emphasized that the state is spending more responsibly, which has led to a reduction in borrowing and future fiscal pressure.

Nazare highlighted the importance of political stability for maintaining investor confidence, warning that instability could affect this positive trend. He also reminded of the deficit target of 6.2% of GDP for the end of the year, emphasizing the need for responsible management of public funds.
