The Minister of Energy, Bogdan Ivan, announced that Romania will be able to keep 3 coal-fired power units operational until 2029, due to the renegotiation with the European Commission of the decarbonization schedule. This modification of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) will prevent the risk of a blackout this winter.
Ivan emphasized that two of the coal units will remain active at least until August 2024. The plants in Craiova will ensure the supply of thermal energy for the population, electricity, and steam for the Ford company, while those in Govora will provide thermal energy until the new energy system of the municipality is implemented. This decision is considered a significant victory for the Romanian energy system.
