The annual report of the BNR regarding the balance of payments shows that Romania had a negative current account balance of 28.853 billion euros in 2024, compared to 21.497 billion euros in 2023, which represents 8.2% of GDP. This increase in the deficit was influenced by the decrease in the surplus of the services balance and the contraction of the surplus in secondary income. The BNR emphasizes that the negative evolution of the balance of payments reflects internal inconsistencies, such as the slowdown in economic growth and the relaxation of fiscal policies.

The current account deficit increased by approximately 34%, while the capital account recorded a surplus reduced by over 40%. Almost 93% of the current account deficit came from transactions with EU states, and 63% of it was with the euro area. On the other hand, the financial account had positive net flows of 19.9 billion euros, largely influenced by relations with the European Union.
