Perplexity, an artificial intelligence start-up, has proposed to buy Google's Chrome browser for $34.5 billion, arguing that an independent operator would improve user safety. The bid comes amid legal pressures facing Google, including antitrust lawsuits in the US. Perplexity noted that if it took over Chrome, Google would remain the default search engine and the open-source Chromium platform would continue to be maintained. The bid has sparked skepticism among investors as more of a marketing ploy.
