Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare said on Wednesday that Romania’s progress in reducing its budget deficit is giving the country stronger arguments in European negotiations. He stressed that fiscal and budgetary consolidation efforts must continue to support the interests of the Romanian economy.
The statement was made ahead of the meeting of European Union finance ministers, ECOFIN, scheduled to take place in Brussels on November 9–10. Nazare announced that he had held a technical meeting with the Finance Ministry team to analyze the dossiers under negotiation and prepare Romania’s position.
The minister said that meeting fiscal and budgetary targets strengthens the country’s credibility at the negotiating table. According to him, Romania is building its position through domestic results, technical arguments, and cooperation with countries that share common interests.
Data from the Finance Ministry show that the budget deficit fell to 3.81% of GDP in the first nine months of 2026, from 5.31% in the same period last year. At the same time, public investment increased by approximately 30%, reaching 107.77 billion lei.
