Negotiations for a $60 billion merger between Japanese car giants Honda and Nissan have collapsed.

The merger that would have formed one of the world's biggest carmakers will no longer happen as talks ended on Thursday. The announcement comes after speculation that negotiations had stalled and Nissan had been reluctant to become a secondary player in a possible merger with Honda, which enjoys a better financial position.
