The Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration of Spain has proposed a draft royal decree that allows the granting of widow's pension to unmarried couples who have lived together for at least five years. If the couple has children or the partners are already registered as unmarried partners, the required period is reduced to two years.
To benefit from the pension, couples must provide evidence of stable cohabitation. The measure can be applied retroactively for individuals who lost their partner before January 1, 2022. The average widow's pension is 936.3 euros per month, with the majority of beneficiaries being women. The project continues the trend of expanding rights for unmarried couples, establishing clear requirements for accessing widow's benefits.
