The police in Rome arrested a 49-year-old Romanian after finding a baby just three weeks old in an unsanitary apartment, on a dirty mattress, surrounded by garbage and mold. The discovery was made following a complaint from doctors, who alerted the authorities after the child's mother left the hospital without ensuring the necessary treatment for the baby.
In the apartment, the police also discovered five kilograms of marijuana and hashish, with an estimated value between 60,000 and 70,000 euros. The baby was entrusted to the medical staff at a neonatal hospital, awaiting a decision from the Juvenile Justice Authority.
The man was arrested for illegal possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and is under house arrest, while his mother has been charged. The two were already involved in a trial for manslaughter related to the death of another child, who died from fulminant meningitis and a lung infection after a home birth without medical assistance.
