16.1% of the population of Germany is at risk of poverty, especially affecting single individuals and single parents.

According to the latest data from the Federal Statistical Office, 13.3 million people in Germany, or 16.1% of the population, are living below the poverty line, an increase from 15.5% in 2024. The poverty line is defined by the European Union as an income below 60% of the average income, equivalent to 1,446 euros net per month for a single adult and 3,036 euros for a family of four.

The most vulnerable categories include people living alone (30.9% affected) and single parents (28.7%). The risk is highest among the unemployed, with 64.9% below the poverty line, followed by economically inactive individuals (33.8%) and pensioners (19.1%).

The study, based on a micro-census, takes into account not only income but also the standard of living and access to essential goods, highlighting the complexity of the poverty issue in Germany.
