The Romanian Cultural Institute in London marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day with a debate dedicated to the Holocaust of the Roma, attended by 130 people, a record number for such events. Moderated by journalist Petru Clej, the discussion included guests such as Adrian-Nicolae Furtună, Virgil Bițu, and Professor Marius Turda, who addressed the deportations of the Roma in 1942, when, by the order of Marshal Ion Antonescu, both nomadic and sedentary Roma were sent to Transnistria. The guests emphasized that the deportations were motivated by systemic racism and the ideology of national purification.
There was also discussion about the trauma passed down through generations and the ongoing discrimination against the Roma, who are often minimized as victims of the Holocaust. Romania's ambassador to London, Laura Popescu, highlighted the recognition of the Romanian state's responsibility and the importance of acknowledging the past. Aura Woodward, the director of ICR London, described the event as a courageous conversation, concluding with a call for continued public dialogue and combating racism, emphasizing that the memory of the Roma Holocaust remains insufficiently known.
