Germany is facing a significant change in the migration of European citizens, for the first time in 15 years, the number of those leaving exceeds that of those arriving. At the end of 2023, approximately 5.1 million citizens from other EU states were living in Germany, with Romanians being the largest community, followed by Poles.

Although many come in search of better opportunities, the reality often proves disappointing, with high living costs and a sense of social alienation. Most EU citizens employed in Germany work in low-skilled fields, and the lack of German language skills limits professional advancement. The report appears in a tense political context, with proposals to reduce integration programs, which could further affect the integration of these workers into German society.
