World Vision Romania has published a statement drawing attention to the pejorative terms associated with 'woman' in dictionaries, such as 'wife' or 'public woman', in contrast to the positive definitions for 'man', which include terms like 'brave' or 'strong'. The organization calls on the Romanian Academy to revise these definitions to promote gender equality. Mihaela Nabăr, executive director of World Vision Romania, emphasizes the importance of words in shaping cultural perceptions and respect for women.
As part of the initiative 'the word in the showcase', the term 'woman' is redefined with positive traits, such as 'strong' and 'intelligent', to change public perception. The call comes against the backdrop of alarming statistics regarding abuse against young women, and the organization emphasizes that gender pressure in schools profoundly affects girls' self-esteem. Nabăr states that changing definitions is essential for preventing violence and combating stereotypes.
