Vodafone Romania has announced a partnership with Satellite Connect Europe to develop satellite connectivity services that will allow smartphones to automatically connect to satellites when terrestrial mobile signal is weak. Tests for this technology, called 'direct to device' (D2D), will begin in Romania in the summer of 2026.
This initiative aims to eliminate coverage gaps and will support both consumers and emergency services, ensuring continuous communication in difficult conditions. Vodafone Romania is collaborating with European mobile operators and EU institutions to create a harmonized framework for satellite services. The CEO of Vodafone Romania, Nedim Baytorun, emphasized the company's commitment to improving connectivity in Romania, while Meredith Sharples, director of Satellite Connect Europe, highlighted the importance of this partnership for European users.
