On July 28, 2026, Unit 1 of the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant will be shut down in a controlled manner and disconnected from the National Energy System due to the unprecedented low level of the Danube, caused by severe drought. Nuclearelectrica has announced that this measure is preventive and will not affect nuclear safety, personnel, or the environment.
The decision was made following forecasts issued by the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management, and the plant's experts will implement the necessary measures to maintain safety margins. Nuclearelectrica is closely monitoring the evolution of the Danube's level to ensure safe operation. The shutdown of the unit aims to protect nuclear safety and the reliability of the facilities.
