Two women were detained for 24 hours on charges of influence peddling, complicity in the forgery of official documents, incitement to abuse of office, and complicity in bribery.

One of them was caught in the act on July 28, receiving the sum of 7,500 euros for facilitating the resolution of cases for regaining Romanian citizenship. The investigation also targets the forgery of civil status documents in Ukraine, to create a fictitious ancestry necessary for regaining citizenship.

Prosecutors established that the defendant requested sums of money, misleading witnesses regarding her influence over officials at the National Authority for Citizenship. It was also established that she caused an official to register applications for regaining citizenship without the presence of the applicants.

The other defendant was accused of influence peddling and complicity in bribery, having been caught in the act while receiving 7,500 euros to expedite the process of regaining citizenship.
