The President of the USA, Donald Trump, had a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on March 3, 2026, where he criticized him for his stance on the war in Iran. Trump stated that Merz should focus on ending the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, where he believes he has been "totally ineffective."

In a post on his social media, Trump emphasized that Merz should spend less time meddling in efforts to combat the Iranian nuclear threat. Trump also mentioned that the USA is considering reducing the number of American troops in Germany. Merz responded that his relationship with Trump remains good, but he expressed concern about the economic impact of the conflict in the Middle East on Europe. The exchanges continued, with Trump accusing Merz of supporting the idea that Iran should possess nuclear weapons, which Merz had previously denied.
