On Tuesday, the temperatures in the mountain resorts of Bâlea Lake and Păltiniș were several degrees higher compared to the municipality of Sibiu, where thermometers indicated -12.5 degrees Celsius. The phenomenon of thermal inversion was explained by Narcisa Milian, spokesperson for the Weather Forecast Service, who mentioned that the warmer air above influences the weather conditions. Normally, the temperature decreases with altitude, but in the case of thermal inversion, the cold air remains at ground level, while the mountain areas enjoy higher temperatures. At Păltiniș, at an altitude of over 1,400 meters, the temperature was -5.3 degrees, and at Bâlea Lake, at over 2,000 meters, it was -5.2 degrees, with a snow layer of 128 centimeters, the largest in the county.
