Starting May 1, the price of a subway ride in Bucharest will increase to 7 lei, which represents a 40% increase compared to the current fare of 5 lei. This price hike was requested by the Board of Directors of Metrorex and approved by the Minister of Transport, Ciprian Șerban, who confirmed the information for HotNews.

Metrorex justified the need for the fare increase by the rise in total expenses, estimated at 1.96 billion lei for 2026, in conditions where the state subsidy has decreased. Along with the increase in ticket prices, Metrorex also requested an increase in the monthly subscription to 140 lei, from 100 lei, and the fare for the 24-hour card to 18 lei, from 9 lei. Ciprian Șerban signed the order for the price increase one day before announcing his resignation, in the context of the withdrawal of political support for Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan from PSD.
