The Senate of Romania has adopted the legislative initiative proposed by USR senators, Cynthia Păun and Irineu Darău, whereby the term 'handicap' will be replaced with 'disability' in Law no. 448/2006 regarding the protection and promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities. Senator Irineu Darău emphasized that this modification represents a fundamental change in the way society perceives persons with disabilities, promoting civilization, respect, and inclusion.
The project aims to align with European standards and use more appropriate language, removing the negative connotations associated with the term 'handicap'. Additionally, Senator Cynthia Păun mentioned that the change is an important moral-linguistic correction that reflects a modern approach centered on the dignity of vulnerable individuals. The vote was favorable, with 78 votes in favor, 32 abstentions, and no votes against. The project will be submitted to the vote of the Chamber of Deputies, which has a decisive role.
