In the first two months of 2026, the Romanian police identified over 1,100 tax evasion crimes, resulting in 1,000 criminal cases, of which 591 were opened ex officio. The value of the precautionary measures and the damages recovered exceeds 250 million lei, marking a significant increase of 192% compared to the same period in 2025.
The Director of the Directorate for Investigating Economic Crime, Aurel Dobre, emphasized that last year approximately 7,300 crimes were reported, with damages exceeding one billion lei. Regarding smuggling, the police confiscated 2.1 million cigarettes and 360 kilograms of tobacco, registering 60 criminal cases. Additionally, 100 operational actions were carried out in 2025, targeting 726 individuals, with 842 search warrants executed. In 2026, 14 operational actions were conducted, resulting in 18 arrests and 14 detentions.
