The Romanian government adopted, on Thursday, a resolution to declassify documents prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between January 1, 1990, and December 31, 1992, at the proposal of the MFA. This tranche includes 5,376 files, stored in 768 folders, which provide insight into a crucial period for Romania, including events such as the first free elections and the reunification of Germany.
Among the titles of the files are 'Reactions in the USSR to the Revolution of December 22, 1989' and 'Treaty of Cooperation, Good Neighborliness, and Friendship with the USSR.' Minister Oana Ţoiu emphasized the importance of public access to this information to combat distrust and conspiracies. The documents will be prepared for public consultation, and the digitization process will facilitate access for researchers and the public. Exceptions to declassification include materials regarding state cipher and sensitive information related to the security of diplomatic missions.
