The Re-technologization Project of Unit 1 of CNE Cernavodă is in the second stage of development, with an estimated completion towards the end of 2027. Nuclearelectrica has announced the completion of the first continuous concrete pouring for the permanent structures of the project, a complex operation carried out on the site of the power plant. Unit 1, which began commercial operation in 1996, will be shut down for re-technologization in 2026, and after completion, it will operate for another 30 years, contributing to the energy security of Romania.
The concrete pouring was carried out under strict safety conditions, using approximately 3,470 cubic meters of concrete. The project has a significant environmental impact, avoiding 145 million tons of CO2 from being emitted upon commissioning. Nuclearelectrica emphasizes the importance of nuclear energy in the EU energy mix, aiming to expand the Romanian nuclear program through the re-technologization of Unit 1 and the development of new reactors.
