The Orthodox Church commemorates today Saint Martyr Achilina, a young woman from Byblos, Phoenicia, born at the end of the 3rd century. The daughter of the Christian Eutolmius, she was baptized by Bishop Eutalius and raised in the Christian faith by her mother, after her father's death. At only 15 years old, she spoke to her peers about Christ and urged them not to worship pagan gods. During the persecutions initiated by Emperor Diocletian in the year 303, Achilina was arrested for her faith and subjected to terrible tortures, including flogging and the insertion of a heated rod into her ears. After she gave up her soul following her sufferings, her body was thrown into a garbage pit. According to Christian tradition, an angel of the Lord brought her back to life, but the governor, upon learning of this miracle, ordered her to be beheaded. Thus, the martyrdom of Saint Achilina was completed, honored today in the Orthodox calendar.
