The New Theatre in Bucharest has announced that it has closed after receiving a fine of 20,000 euros from the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU). Representatives of the theatre claim that they complied with all fire safety regulations, having measures such as evacuation routes and fire extinguishing equipment. However, the building housing the theatre does not meet all legal requirements, particularly the lack of smoke detectors, which led to the sealing of the space. The New Theatre considers itself discriminated against, being the only space in the building that has been closed and fined, while other activities in the same building continue without issues. Spectators who purchased tickets will receive their money back, and the theatre has opened an account for donations to help pay the fine, which can be reduced if paid quickly.
