The spokesperson of the Ministry of National Defense (MApN), Cristian Popovici, provided details about the incident in which a drone crashed over a building in Galați, causing a fire. He emphasized that Romania cannot risk generating more threats than it can prevent, considering the strict limitations of the Army.
On the night of the incident, air alerts were issued in border areas, and drones were monitored by radars. A drone entered national airspace and disappeared from radar before crashing. MApN scrambled two F-16 aircraft and an IAR 330 SOCAT helicopter to respond to the alert.
Asked why the drone that crashed over a building in central Galați was not shot down, MApN spokesperson Cristian Popovici stated on Friday morning, on Digi24:
"It is a legitimate question and citizens need to know that we are doing everything we can, but the Army has very strict limitations in this situation, because we cannot risk creating more threats than we can prevent. The law allows us to open fire under certain circumstances on these objects used in the conflict in Ukraine, but under the conditions in which it protects the lives of the population and property."
