Ciprian Șerban, who resigned on Thursday from the position of Minister of Transport, explained that the decision to increase the prices of subway tickets was made by the Board of Directors of Metrorex. He emphasized that he does not run Metrorex and that he signed the order for the price increase after following all the procedural steps. According to Șerban, the 160% increase in electricity costs was a determining factor in this decision. Starting May 1, a subway ride will cost 7 lei, up from 5 lei, and other fares, such as subscriptions and cards, will also be increased. Metrorex justified these price hikes by the rising costs of energy, water, and fuel. Annually, the Bucharest subway transports 156 million passengers, having five lines and 63 stations.
