Although the general inflation in the US has been modest, with a 0.3% increase per month and 2.7% per year, one segment has stood out: streaming services. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 'subscriptions and rentals of video and video games' increased by 19.5% in December. This includes platforms like Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+. In contrast, cable and live streaming services grew by only 1.1%, as did recorded music. The increase in streaming prices is influenced by the price hikes announced by major platforms, such as Disney+ and Hulu, and the launch of new expensive streaming platforms like ESPN and Fox. Additionally, the football season has contributed to the increased demand for these services. Although this 19.5% increase is likely temporary, it highlights a problem in the industry, and the growing number of subscribers who are canceling services (churn) could become a consequence. Companies are exploring more creative offers to reduce churn and provide more value to consumers, but it remains to be seen whether these offers will offset the price increases.
