The High Court of Cassation and Justice decided on Thursday to return the Mineriadei case to the General Prosecutor's Office, noting irregularities in the indictment and excluding the documents containing the statements of the defendants before the parliamentary inquiry committee. The court accepted the requests and exceptions raised by the defendants, including Ion Iliescu, Petre Roman, and Gelu Voican-Voiculescu, noting that the description of the facts and the analysis of the evidence were insufficient.

The case, in which Iliescu is accused of the violent repression of protesters in University Square, was returned to the court on April 2, 2025, after being initially sent to trial in 2017. Military prosecutors accuse the former leadership of Romania from 1990 of violence resulting in 4 deaths and 1,300 injuries, and the case was re-examined by the military prosecutor's office before being sent back to the supreme court.
