The government will meet on Friday in an extraordinary session to adopt a decision regarding the establishment of a major force situation at Nuclearelectrica, in the context of the low flow of the Danube, which affects the operation of the nuclear power plant in Cernavodă. The decision comes after the shutdown of Reactor 1 at the beginning of the week and under the conditions in which the company warns that Reactor 2 could also be shut down at any moment, depending on the evolution of hydrological conditions.

A potential shutdown of both reactors would take approximately 20% of Romania's electricity production offline, which would necessitate an increase in energy imports. According to an analysis by the Intelligent Energy Association, Romania can cover its needs through imports only if it receives support from neighboring countries, but their availability is uncertain, considering that they are also affected by drought and the reduction of nuclear and hydroelectric energy production.

The situation is determined by the very low level of the Danube, which has reached about one-third of the multiannual average for this period. Hydrologists estimate that flows will continue to decrease in the coming days, approaching historical lows.
