The "Elie Wiesel" Institute requests the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Public Ministry to investigate the commemoration of Corneliu Zelea Codreanu in Tâncăbești on November 30.

The National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania "Elie Wiesel" has sent an open letter to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Public Ministry, requesting a swift investigation into the events of November 30, when supporters of the Legionary movement commemorated Corneliu Zelea Codreanu at the site of his assassination. The Institute emphasizes that these manifestations contravene Emergency Ordinance no. 31/2002, which prohibits fascist, legionary, racist, or xenophobic organizations and symbols.

In the past year, there has been an increase in hate speech, which affects the memory of Holocaust victims. The Institute mentioned that, although several individuals were brought to trial in 2025 for acts related to this legislation, the current situation suggests a return to old habits, with pro-legionary manifestations under the protection of the authorities.

Representatives of the Institute wonder whether the legislation is being effectively enforced and whether there is a tendency to allow extremism to manifest freely, to the detriment of the memory of the victims. There is also reference to a decision by the Constitutional Court that highlights the danger of public apology for extremist ideologies. The Institute calls on the authorities to swiftly analyze the events in Tâncăbești to prevent the recurrence of such situations.
