The Danube has reached a low level of 16 cm, the lowest in the last 30 years, below the historical minimum of 17 cm from 1996, according to the Lower Danube River Administration.
The island in the middle of the river is expanding, forcing the ferry that connects Galați to Tulcea County to take detours to avoid grounding. Navigators are facing significant losses, being forced to load fewer barges and make more trips, which generates additional costs, according to Digi24.
The forecasts are not favorable, with expectations of further decreases in levels. The flow of the Danube at the entrance to the country is only 1,350 cubic meters per second, compared to the average of 3,900 from a typical August, according to the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA).
