A recent survey conducted by Save the Children Romania highlights the increasing risks that minors in the country are exposed to in the online environment. The study, carried out on a sample of children aged between 12 and 17 years, shows that almost 80% of them browse the internet without restrictions, and over a third of children aged between 12 and 14 have public profiles on social networks, facilitating contact with strangers. Almost half of the youth have been approached by unknown individuals, and 30% have experienced disturbing situations. Cyberbullying is a constant reality, with 60% of children witnessing such incidents. Additionally, 68% have been exposed to traumatic content. The survey also reveals exposure to materials related to betting and gambling, as well as risky challenges, with 60% of minors participating in these. Advertising for illegal substances reaches the majority of teenagers, and 66% of children have no limits on the time spent online. Save the Children recommends urgent legislative measures, including banning access to social networks for children under 13 and mandatory digital education in schools, emphasizing the need for swift interventions to protect minors.
