The price of a public transport ticket in Bucharest could increase from 3 to 5 lei, according to a proposal made by the Bucharest Transport Company (STB). This initiative will be discussed at a meeting of the General Assembly of Shareholders (AGA) next week, shortly after Metrorex announced a similar fare increase for the subway.

The proposal has generated political disputes between the Capital City Hall, led by Ciprian Ciucu, and the General Council of Bucharest (CGMB), dominated by the PSD. In January, a proposal to increase fares was rejected, and now the AGA STB will present a new initiative with the support of PSD councilors.

Although the general mayor plays a crucial role in introducing the proposal on the agenda, Ciprian Ciucu has not included it so far. Marian Artimon, a PSD councilor, emphasized the need for fare increases to avoid the company's bankruptcy.

The new general director of STB, Andrei Dinculescu, mentioned that an increase in the ticket price will not necessarily bring more money to the company, but it will improve cash flow. STB has already requested the increase to 5 lei, but the proposal has not been added to the agenda.
