Sorin Grindeanu, the president of PSD, stated that the administrative-territorial reform of Romania is absolutely necessary, emphasizing the importance of merging localities and counties, along with the decentralization of governance. In an interview, he clarified that the reform does not involve massive layoffs, but rather a restructuring aimed at optimizing expenses.
Grindeanu mentioned that there are approximately 500 communes with fewer than 500 inhabitants, which is not sustainable. He also discussed the need for reform with PSD mayors, acknowledging that it could involve giving up some functions. Despite the difficulties, Grindeanu believes that there is political will to advance this reform, which has been on the PSD agenda but without concrete results so far. The current context shows that the administrative structure inherited from the '60s no longer reflects the current demographic and economic realities.
