The National Environmental Guard discovered that only 0.54% of the municipal waste collected from Sector 3 of the Capital was treated before being deposited in the landfill, severely compromising Romania's recycling targets at the European level.
Following inspections carried out at the Intercommunity Development Association for Integrated Management of Municipal Waste in Bucharest (ADIGIDMB) and at the Sector 3 City Hall, it was found that nearly 100,000 tons of waste were disposed of directly, without complying with the legal obligation for treatment. The Environmental Guard imposed a fine of 100,000 lei on the Sector 3 City Hall and a fine of 60,000 lei on ADIGIDMB, enforcing compliance measures. The commissioners emphasized the necessity of sending all mixed collected waste for mechanical-biological treatment before disposal, considering that Romania must achieve a recycling rate of at least 50% by 2025, with increasing targets for the following years.
