Saint George the Great Martyr is celebrated on April 23, being a symbol of courage and faith in Christ. He lived during the reign of Emperor Diocletian and was martyred for his faith. After his death, miracles occurred, and many converted to Christianity. On this day, popular traditions are rich, marking the beginning of the pastoral year. People place branches of beech and willow at the pigsties to protect the animals and crops. The rituals include passing through fire for purification and fumigating the house with incense. Also, unmarried girls can see the face of their destined one in clean water. It is forbidden to sleep on this day, and those who do not respect the tradition will be sleepy all year. It is believed that basil sown at sunrise brings honor, and gathering medicinal plants is an important practice. This celebration is a moment of reflection on faith and ancestral traditions.
