Romania's total external debt reached 227.3 billion euros in 2025, with a current account deficit of 30.1 billion euros

According to the data from the National Bank of Romania (BNR), Romania's total external debt increased in 2025 by 23.837 billion euros, reaching 227.347 billion euros. Long-term debt accounted for 78.9% of the total, increasing by 14.8% compared to the previous year, while short-term debt rose by 1.6%.

During the same period, the current account of the balance of payments recorded a deficit of 30.127 billion euros, up from 28.853 billion euros in 2024. Direct investments from non-residents increased to 8.153 billion euros, and the long-term external debt service ratio decreased to 17.2%. The coverage ratio of goods and services imports was 6 months, and the coverage of short-term external debt with foreign exchange reserves increased to 104.8%.
