Cătălin Dragomir, a 45-year-old Romanian hacker from Constanța, was extradited to the United States, where he pleaded guilty to the illegal access of the computer network of the Oregon Department of Emergency Management. He sold the personal data of several individuals on the dark web, causing estimated damages of $250,000. The FBI investigated the case for three years, discovering that Cătălin Dragomir exploited a system vulnerability to gain access and offered sensitive information for $3,000 in cryptocurrency. Cyber defense specialists emphasize that attacks on critical infrastructures are part of a cybercrime industry, with global losses of ten trillion dollars. Cătălin Dragomir was arrested in November 2024 and, after a swift judicial process, was extradited in January 2025. Although he claimed he was unaware of the charges, he pleaded guilty before a federal judge. His sentencing will be pronounced on May 26, and he faces up to seven years in prison for his actions.
