By 2027, Romania aims to develop advanced detection capabilities in the Black Sea as part of efforts to protect the Neptun Deep offshore gas project, which will transform the country into a net gas exporter. Radu Burnete, the economic advisor to the president, emphasized the need to invest in radars, drones, and sensors to better monitor offshore activities, in light of recent threats, including airspace violations by Russian drones and floating mines. The funding for these capabilities will come partially from the EU's 'SAFE' rearmament initiative, which will provide Romania with 16.6 billion euros between 2026 and 2030. This will revitalize the country's defense industry and stimulate the economy, including by redirecting production to struggling sectors such as the automotive industry. Burnete anticipated an acceleration of economic growth starting in 2027, supported by defense spending and the development of offshore gas. Additionally, the Black Sea and the Danube River are considered attractive to investors, and Romania aims to become a logistics hub for the reconstruction of Ukraine, supported by investments in the infrastructure of the port of Constanța and interconnections with Moldova and Ukraine.
