The bill adopted by the Senate and currently under debate in the Chamber of Deputies provides for the approval of a number of 859 brown bears for preventing attacks on the population and material damage, as well as 110 bears for intervention.
The harvesting of intervention bears will be done until December 31, 2026, using the methods of 'ambush' and 'tracking', with a ban on hunting females accompanied by cubs under 2 years old. The harvesting of bears for prevention is prohibited in areas where hunting is banned. The Ministry of Environment has estimated that there are between 10,419 and 12,770 brown bears in Romania, with an optimal number of approximately 4,000. The Minister of Environment emphasized the need for intervention measures, considering the frequent presence of bears in localities and resorts, and reaffirmed the importance of citizen safety in relation to species conservation.
