Romania and Bulgaria have obtained Austria's agreement for partial membership of the EU's Schengen area of free movement, with sea and air borders.

The agreement comes after 13 years of diplomatic efforts, and Romania's interior minister said the accession will start with air and sea borders from March 2024. The opening of land borders has been postponed until talks next year.
