According to a survey conducted by Austrian central bankers, Romania has the highest proportion of residents who wish to emigrate from the Central and Southeast European region. Approximately 3.4% of the adult population, equivalent to over 522,000 people, intend to leave in the next 12 months, the main reason being the search for a better job. Additionally, 10% of Romanians plan to emigrate in the next 10 years. 14% of respondents stated that they have previously lived abroad. Romania has recorded a decrease in population due to migration and a negative natural increase, with 230,000 Romanians having emigrated last year.
