Raed Arafat, head of the Department for Emergency Situations, has called on Romanian lawmakers to legislate the limitation of minors' access to social networks, following serious events involving children. Arafat emphasizes that many European countries, such as France and the United Kingdom, have recognized this issue as a matter of public health. He argues that social networks can have negative effects on children's mental health, such as anxiety and depression, and that it is the state's responsibility to protect young people from associated risks.
Arafat compares access to social networks with existing bans on tobacco and alcohol, arguing that these platforms are designed to manipulate young users. In contrast, former Minister of Education, Daniel David, rejected the idea of banning access, arguing that technology is an integral part of modern life and that emphasis should be placed on parental control, not on bans. David warns that excluding young people from the online environment could disadvantage them in the context of digitalization.
