Psychosocial risks in the workplace, including long working hours, job insecurity, and harassment, are responsible for over 840,000 deaths annually and contribute to the increase of cardiovascular diseases and mental health issues, according to a report by the International Labour Organization (ILO).
Manal Azzi, coordinator at the ILO, emphasizes that these risks are becoming a major challenge for workers' health. The report highlights that occupational stress and inadequate working conditions can lead to significant losses in physical and mental health, generating approximately 12 billion lost workdays annually due to depression and anxiety. Additionally, long working hours are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, with 35% of employees working more than 48 hours a week. The ILO recommends preventive measures and support for employees, including adjustments to work and access to support services, to improve the psychosocial work environment.
