Over 11,500 people have signed a petition against the increase in subway fares, initiated by the SENS party on the Declic platform. Authorities, especially the Board of Directors of Metrorex, are analyzing the proposal to raise ticket prices, which could increase from 5 lei to 7 lei starting in May 2026.

This would represent an increase of over 130% in a year and a half. Economic expert Adrian Negrescu warns that such an increase has no precedent in public transport in Romania and should be justified by an improvement in services, which are currently deficient, with overcrowding and old trains. Additionally, Metrorex relies on subsidies from the state budget, which exceed 700-800 million lei annually.

Public dissatisfaction is evident, and the initiators of the petition argue that the increase affects vulnerable individuals in a difficult economic context. Moreover, the price increase could lead to a rise in the use of personal cars, exacerbating traffic and pollution problems.

The Bucharest Transport Company has also announced that it is considering raising fares, which could make price increases in public transport a reality for Bucharest residents.
