Approximately 200 miners from the Lupeni mine protested on Wednesday morning, April 1, blocking themselves underground due to dissatisfaction related to the extension of temporary contracts, which were offered only for a period of four months.
Employees from the fourth shift blocked themselves in the mine, while those from the first shift refused to start the conveyor belts. These miners represent 10% of the employees of the Valea Jiului Energy Complex who have fixed-term contracts.
The general director of the Valea Jiului Energy Complex went down into the mine to talk to the protesters, and union leader Darius Cîmpean promised that he would try to resolve the employees' issue.
The protest lasted about an hour, and the miners were assured that their contracts would be extended for a longer duration.
