A recent bill proposes the introduction of personalized license plates for drivers in Romania, allowing them to choose combinations of letters and numbers, while adhering to strict readability rules. These plates will contain between 1 and 5 characters, written in uppercase, and will be preceded by the abbreviation of the county. The assignment of personalized numbers will be done through a public auction organized by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the right to use them can be transferred between owners. The fees for obtaining these plates will be higher than the standard ones. The legislative project aims to generate additional revenue for the state budget and modernize vehicle identification. Additionally, license plates have become digital since September 2025, allowing for online orders and direct home delivery, reducing bureaucracy and time spent at counters. The new system will facilitate access to automotive services through digital platforms. The project is currently under debate.
