Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, received Riley Barnes on Thursday at the Patriarchal Residence. Barnes is Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom at the US Department of State. The discussions focused on the complex geopolitical and religious situation in several regions of the world, including the conflict in Ukraine, which is taking place near Romania.
According to the Patriarchal Administration, Patriarch Daniel emphasized that religious freedom is guaranteed in Romania under Article 29 of the Constitution. He also highlighted the spiritual, educational, social-charitable and cultural role of recognized religious denominations, as well as their contribution to maintaining social peace.
The Patriarch said that the Romanian Orthodox Church is praying for an end to conflicts and for a wise, just and lasting resolution to the war in Ukraine. Romania continues to support Ukrainian refugees through material and spiritual assistance.
Riley Barnes expressed appreciation for the faith and traditions of the Romanian people. The two also discussed the problems facing young people, including addictions, individualism and loneliness. The Patriarch advocated responsible freedom, the protection of human dignity, solidarity and interfaith dialogue. The meeting was also attended by US Ambassador to Bucharest Darryl Nirenberg, as well as representatives of the State Department and the American diplomatic mission.
