In an interview for Le Monde, President Nicușor Dan emphasized that Romania is facing a significant vulnerability in the face of manipulation and disinformation campaigns, including those targeting the presence of French troops in the country.

He acknowledged that, at present, state institutions do not have the necessary infrastructure to quickly detect false information circulating on social media. Nicușor Dan mentioned a recent example of disinformation regarding a false order to conscript 200,000 people into the army, highlighting the lack of effective tools to counter such campaigns.

However, he promised that, in the next six months, Romania will have automated capabilities to detect and respond to fake news. The president also highlighted a deeper issue: the low trust of citizens in state institutions, fueled by corruption, which makes them more vulnerable to disinformation.
